Q: ADD Meds vs. Wellbutrin?
I’ve been on ADD meds for many years now. Switching over the years from Ritalin to Concerta to Adderall and now to Vyvanse. The reason for the switching was because the meds would eventually stop working (tolerance I suppose). Now, even with the new Vyvanse script, I’m not getting the lift and focus I used to have. It’s almost as if they all make me feel tired and dull now. My memory seems to be worsening too. I’ve heard lots about Wellbutrin and it sometimes being prescribed to treat ADD. Does Wellbutrin give you that alert motivated sense, keeping “on task”? I think I need a change.

A: No, Wellbutrin does not give you that feeling. Look it up on Web MD.com. Wellbutrin is an antidepressant. Adderall, Ritalin are stimulants. Your doctor probably needs to increase your Adderall dose. Maybe prescribe you both kind of Adderall

Q: Need advise on medication for adult with ADHD?
Ritalin, Adderall, Wellbutrin etc.

Common side effects
How easily addictive

He may be mildly Bi polar vs. severely ADD.

He is nearly 50 father of 3 & very overweight.

And is perpetually unemployed due to his problems.
So he is also perpetually poor & can’t afford to go to a counselor or psychiatrist on a regular basis.

HELP!

A: Okay, for all the drugs you mentioned, simply go to http://www.drugs.com and do a search for them and it’ll tell you side effects and addictiveness profile in laymen’s terms.

In terms of attention deficit d/o I like Vyvanse, professionally, as I’ve seen good results with it; it’s slow release and not as addictive as adderall, you can look up that drug as well as the others you asked about.

All my best to you.

A: He needs to consult with a physician about this due to his co-joint diagnosis of bi-polar disorder. ADHD is usually treated with stimulants ( you can find the side effects of all the drugs you listed in a Yahoo! web searc for each) and a stimulant is not good for mania.

Q: Getting Rx for undiagnosed attention-deficit problems?
Short version: How do I legitimately get Adderall for my attention problems?

Long version (please be patient and read the whole thing, sorry to be long-winded): I have massive concentration issues. I daydream a lot, it’s a little difficult to focus in conversations, I can’t always focus when reading articles online, and I have a lot of trouble with studying. Sometimes if a thought is stuck in my head (either because I’m really excited or totally pissed or for some other reason), I can’t move on to my work unless I get it off my chest (by, for example, talking or typing about it). I have some organizational issues and usually find it hard to stick to one task.

My school counselor refused to write an Rx and insisted that I work on behavioral methods (specifically, study habits). I tried to make it clear that I’ve experimented with study habits for 8+ years and have sought professional online resources for more tips. I’ve already tried everything she named during our session and nothing worked (and I told her this). But she got stuck on how I’d never sought in-person help and insisted that that was the best option for me. By the way, this is also the person who decided I’d never been clinically depressed after 20-30 minutes of talking to me without asking me anything related to depression – I struggled with depression for 5-6 years and was officially diagnosed and treated for it in undergrad.

I’ve taken Prozac for the depression and Wellbutrin for sleep problems (I know, it’s an antidepressant, but I took it to treat my insomnia – it didn’t work). I’ve taken mini-screening tests online for ADD (the 5-minute ones) and they all say I either have moderate or strong ADD, but the results from a more indepth one were less sure. I’m afraid to take an official ADHD/ADD evaluation because I don’t think my symptoms are strong enough to guarantee a diagnosis and my chances of getting Adderall are probably 0 if I take it and am not diagnosed.

I’m young and in a demanding career path (med school) and know that many people will assume I want Adderall to “dope” – I want it because I’ve tried every natural way to solve my problem that I can think of (except loading up on caffeine) and none worked. It doesn’t help that I made it through a demanding educational path and got in med school either. I’m not failing out of school, but I am a little above the minimum passing level despite the crazy amount of time in front of my books. In undergrad, I had to give up a lot of my social life to get my work done (which didn’t help the depression). According to the same counselor, Ritalin, Adderall, and Straterra are my only Rx options, and my research leads me to believe that Adderall is the best for me. How can I get this? Should I see a psychiatrist vs. a GP? How do I present my case? If you know anyone in my situation, how did they “treat” their problems? I know that someone out there would honestly think I needed an Adderall Rx, but I need to find them in as low cost and easy way as possible.

Thanks for the patience.
Also, as terrible as this sounds, I’m willing to lie about taking Adderall in the past. If I can get it easier by saying that I’ve taken it and it helped, I’ll do it. I just don’t know if I should say I took a friend’s pill or was officially prescribed it. (By the way, please don’t use any of this to judge the whole medical profession.)
Thanks! I’m looking into an appointment. Specialists (neurologists, psychiatrists, etc) seem to cost a lot, so I’m trying GP/PCPs (still can’t get the cost below $125 though)

A: See a GP and present your case exactly as you have done here. He or she can determine if a psych referral is in order, if they are reluctant to Rx for you.
