Q: What causes depression? Does it afflict even happy healthy individuals from time to time and if so, why?
I don’t mean clinical depression; serious depression where you entertain suicidal thoughts or depression that follows life altering events. I am talking about “low level” depression where you feel somewhat blue…but for no apparent reason…things are going well in your life and your relationships are positive…yet you feel a void…a sort of depression. Are there causes for this? Do all people, in varying degrees, go through these depressions?

A: Serotonin and Dopamine. And yes all people do.

Q: What kind of hormonal imbalance causes depression?
I have been feeling really depressed lately and I suspect that my hormones are messed up. What are the different problems you can have that will cause depression? Thanks!

A: More than hormonal imbalance are chemical imbalances of your seratonin and norepinephrine that are produced in the brain. See your doc if your depression lasts longer than a month

Q: What do you think causes depression and anxiety? What healed you?
Interested in different opinions about what causes depression and anxiety?
Please share your stories of what helped and/or healed depression and/or anxiety.

A: I believe prolonged unresolved stress can cause depression and anxiety. I had a lot of stress in my life growing up, both emotional and physical. Therapy and taking medications has helped me feel better. I hope you are doing okay.

*Medication is only a temporary solution.

*Self awareness among ourselves and self learning and preparations for any eventuality.

*Meditation and Yoga can help to self realisation.

*Unfortunately many schools do not teach how to tackle or face problems.

*Long term effect will be mental disorders,suicidal tendency,developing a pro violence attitude etc;

Q: What are some medical causes of depression and panic attacks?
I’m not asking for the antidepressant run through that talks about a chemical imbalance in the brain, but what are some non-psychological disorders/illnesses that would cause depression and panic attacks? As in, what are some alternative diagnosis? eg. thyroid problems

A: High blood pressure, heart disease and brain injury.

Q: If lack of Serotonin usually causes depression and certain events can start depression?
..does that mean that certain (traumatic) events can directly affect neurotransmitters and lower serotonin levels?

A: It is not quite as simple as that but yes. Serotonin isn’t the only thing that affects depression.

Q: What really causes depression? I have been depressed for so long and was wondering what the real cause is.?
Have you ever noticed that none of the questions in mental health section ever get highlighted on the main screen? I think that is interesting. I guess we are all just suppose to be crazy and uninteresting.

A: No one knows what exactly causes clinical depression. Doctors believe it is mainly due to a chemical imbalance in the brain, involving low seratonin levels. This is an ongoing field of study and doctors keep revising their stances and adding elements of complexity to it. Most drugs used to treat it have been developed through trial and error more than educated guessing.

Q: What is the type of depression called whereby being surrounded dull colours causes depression, and bright or?
vibrant colours, like a royal blue sky, can put you in a good mood?

A: S.A.D or seasonal affected disorder.

Q: What causes depression, I’ve been depressed lately, but it sort of went away, then it comes back… whats up?
I don’t get it, it’s like if my heads spinning, my depression comes and goes, what gives?
It’s abnormal, it’s not just “emotions”, as the first answer stated; and it’s not part of a menstrual cycle, as I am a (heterosexual) male.

A: depression. there are lots of reasons that causes depression main reason is negative thinking doing thing we dislike continuously. boredom. bereavement. something the mind cant adjust to.

Q: in your opinion what causes depression and what causes it to go away?
i am 51 years old i have been on anti-depressants since i was 27 in your opinion is depression caused by something that happened to you or is it something you are born with. does the average person that is prescribed anti-depressants take them for the rest of their life or is it more of a temporary thing that the average person recovers from within a few years.i think alcoholism is now classified as a disease, or like when a diabetic has to take insulin shots for the rest of their life,is having depression like having diabetes?
i have been having a hard time getting an erection for the last 3 or 4 years

A: Hey, I’m 13 years old and I have clinically proven depression. It’s knowingly pathetic. But I believe that there are two types of depression, clinical and scenerial. Scenerial is where there is a certian thing you’re going through in your life that’s bringing you down, such as a death in the family more or so it’s a physically noticable attribute that’s making you down. But clinical is whwere you could have seemingly perfect life on the outside, but on the inside you’re being torn apart with destraught and animosity. To where you can barely go on another day. & it’s a lack of seritonin (spell check me) in your brain. It’s indefinatly something you’re born with.
Depression is like diabetes, because antidepressents or insullin shots can make you feel better, but once you’re off them you’re rightb ack to where you were.

Q: Why isn’t it PROVEN that low Serotonin causes depression and that antidepressants increase such transmitters?
It is said its in theory. It is not proven for a fact. It is just believed. But how come? There is a lot of evidence in support of it. Why isn’t it a fact? I don’t understand.

A: Because proving the exact absolute mechanism is extremely difficult especially when you’re dealing with a very diverse disorder like depression. It’s not established that every case of depression is caused by the same thing.

It’s also very hard to gather this sort of evidence because for the most part, the only way to examine the direct behavior is to essentially go in and cut out a chunk of cells and examine them under a microscope. Since in a person with depression, they happen to be using that brain, cutting chunks of it out just to satisfy curiosity with little benefit to the person wouldn’t be very ethical.

To make it an absolute fact the evidence and understanding would have to be absolutely comprehensive, explaining absolutely every minute aspect of it – and it’s still being explored with new technology in the case of mental illness and depression.

Remember, in science, theory doesn’t mean just an idea that has some evidence behind it and is largely conjecture. Theory means it’s a comprehensive system that well explains a phenomena and is supported by a wide variety of evidence across frequently quite a few fields. Gravity, relativity and germ theory are also just theory but those aren’t very heavily disputed are they? No – there are exceptions, and refinements that go on, but by and large they’re pretty comprehensive.

Q: What do you think causes depression?
I know that there are many answers to that question. But do you think that its more of a chemical imbalance or that people are just unhappy with their lives?

A: I think that it is always a chemical imbalance. If this were not the case then all the medications we use to treat depression would not be effective since all of them work by adjusting the levels of certain brain chemicals. While chemical imbalance is the cause of depression, the cause of the chemical imbalance is a different matter entirely. The chemical imbalance could be caused by many factors such as: substance abuse, environmental and situational factors (IE. war, exposure to foreign substances, child birth, auto accidents, death of a family member or friend, etc.). Many of the reasons for chemical imbalance is temporary and fade away over time. Finally the chemical imbalance could be the result of a permanent defect in chemical production or usage as is the case in bipolar disorder. This is also true for the many schizo associated disorders. I’m sure there are others, I am familiar with these two because I am bipolar; schizo and bipolar are closely related.

Being unhappy with your life over time will cause a change in the way your body produces or uses the chemicals that control mood. So in reality the answer can be both, it can be caused by a chemical imbalance due to being unhappy with your life or even a single aspect of your life,

Sincerely,
Terry

Q: If lack of Vitamin-C causes depression, does that mean having Vitamin C creates Positive Energy?
I’m guessing when they say “depression” they mean “unhappiness”.

A: Depression is caused by many different things. Depression isn’t unhappiness, really.

The only thing I have heard that lack of vitamin C causes is scurvy.

Positive energy is in your mind. That’s a good place for it. It has nothing to do with vitamin C, unless you believe it does. In the old days, there was a book called “The Power of Positive Thinking”. The idea of positive thinking is now part of stress management:

But you don’t get it out of a bottle.
