Q: Adjustment disorder?
Can anyone explain what adjustment disorder is? I have read alot on the web about it and find some of it is very confusing! My 10 year old was just diagnosed with it.
Thanks!

A: An Adjustment Disorder diagnosis is given when symptoms are not severe enough to warrant another more serious diagnosis and the person’s symptoms appear to be connected directly to a life event or stressor with which they are having difficulty coping. Generally treatment is anticipated to be short-term as the condition (by definition) does not exceed 6 months in duration unless there continue to be enduring consequences resulting from the stressor (Eg: significantly changed lifestyle as a result of divorce)

The diagnosis is frequently given in the following situations:
-early in treatment when there is not enough information to make a more differential diagnosis
-to children in an attempt to avoid labelling them at such a young age where personality and behavior is quite malleable and subject to so many circumstances beyond their control]
-to anyone who may benefit from psychotherapy in working through some issues, but who’s level of distress is not sufficiently severe to suggest a more serious diagnosis and the clinician needs to be able to bill insurance. An Adjustment Disorder is an Axis I diagnosis and therefore insurance must cover it-a simple V Code (like Bereavement, Parent-Child Relational Problem, etc. will not be covered by insurance and you would need to pay privately for therapy without the diagnosis.

Q: adjustment disorder?
how does family court and cps look at someone with adjustment disorder????

A: They try to give u a chance of adjustment and some advices and above all the complication ahead.

Q: Has anyone with AD (Adjustment Disorder) found an effective way to ward off symptoms when things get tough?
I was told that I’m not a depressive but that I’ve Adjustment Disorder. To put it in simple terms I react to negative events more acutely than most and the effects drag on for a long time, making my life difficult, mainly in the area of personal relationships. It’s part of me that I hate and I don’t know how to deal with it.

A: Look on the bright side more. If you hate it, change it. Think about good things more, and concentrate on them happening rather than focusing on what is negative. Just fill your mind with these good images and make them glow. Whenever you feel yourself slipping into your previous negative behaviour, remind yourself that is no longer your reality, you have chosen to react in a different way to things, and notice how everything suddenly seems a little easier, now you feel lighter.

Q: Is adjustment disorder with depressed mood a disability?
I was wondering if the adjustment disorder with depressed mood a disability? Is this something that can be considered a short/long term disability? I am going to talk to my OHU on monday at work, because I was just diagnosed with this today. Please let me know if it is if you know
It has been over the past year that I realized that things haven’t been right, and I have been seeing a psycologist since the beginning of this year. I think that this would qualify for short term at least?

A: Adjustment Disorders are a short term disability. It’s usually over with after a few months.

However, sometimes people who were diagnosed with this are later diagnosed with Major Depression if the symptoms continue. But that would be up to a psychiatrist to make the diagnosis.

Anybody can get an adjustment disorder if they are overwhelmed by some kind of problem in their lives (such as divorce, loss of a job, etc.)

If it qualifies for anything, it’s most likely going to be only short term.

Q: Whats the difference between depression and adjustment disorder?
I was talking to a friend and I told her i didnt know what was wrong with me and she said Im suffering from “adjustment disorder” as oppose to depression

A: The major differences between a depressive episode and an adjustment disorder include time frames, identifiable precipitating event(s), and severity:

Time frames: depressive episodes, by definition, require diagnosable symptoms for at least 3 consecutive weeks (not so in the case of an adjustment disorder), in addition, an adjustment disorder dx requires symptoms to be present for no more than 6 months after the precipitating event (an additional 6 months for “chronic” adjustment disorder).

Precipitating event(s): adjustment disorders have a very definable genesis – simply put, something happens, and the patient has circumscribed difficulties in adapting to the change. Depression, on the other hand, is not circumstantial (is independent of individual circumstances, and will persist despite “positive” environmental changes or absence of stressors)

Severity : depressive episodes result in symptoms which are considerably more severe than those of an adjustment disorder)

Q: Did anyone experience PPD or adjustment disorder after their baby was born?
My daughter has 6 months old and I have recently been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and adjustment disorder. I’m wondering why I wasn’t diagnosed as having PPD/PND, when they seem to have the same symptoms?

Has anyone else experienced any of these problems after having a baby? Can you please share your stories?

A: Yes i have been dealing with PPD since my 16 month old was born i have good weeks and then fall in a heaps for a little while, I think it depends on the dr you see as to what they diagnose you with but as long as you are being treated and heading towards getting better it doesnt really matter what they call it…..I understnad how you are feeling feel free to email me if you have any questions or just want to chat :)

Q: Hey is it normal to feel derealized feeling at times like that nothing is real I have adjustment disorder also?
is it normal and will it go away knowing adjustment disorder goes away?

A: Actually, it’s fairly common (my therapist told me so). I’ve experienced it myself and it comes and goes. I’m sure once you get over your issues with adjustment disorder you will experience it less or even not at all. (Keep in mind it could come back as the result of psychoactive drug use, traumatic incidents, and many other triggers.)

Q: Has anyone ever been diagnosed with an Adjustment Disorder?
Three years ago after i was cheated on by the father of my child I became suicidal. I have always suffered with depression and I voluntarily checked into a mental health unit for 12 weeks to be assessed. I was diagnosed with an adjustment disorder leading to a nervous breakdown. Has this happened to anyone else? What led up to it and did anyone ever give you advice about coping with it?
I’m fine now…best thing that ever happened just wanted a veiw from anyone else whos been through it.

A: Following the culture-shock of moving to a large city, from a rural area, I suffered from panic attacks and other forms of anxiety. We (counselor & I) suspected an adjustment disorder.
Whatever it was, I had difficulty adjusting to my new environment and found every aspect of the new situation to be very stressful.
Whether or not it was truly adjustment disorder, I can not say. I will say that I was severely depressed, and any further stresses were just too much. With time and counseling my symptoms diminished. I just kept exposing myself with having to deal with the new things a little at a time.

Q: Psychologists – 4 separate dignoses of adjustment disorder – does this show a chronic mental disorder?
If a patient returns again and again for help with depressive and anxious symptoms and has been diagnosed with adjustment disorder on 4 separate occasions, does this not indicate that there is a greater underlying problem, possibly a personality disorder? How many times can you have individual occurrences of adjustment disorder? I thought adjustment disorder just by definition implied a temporary situation.

A: Hi Peta, I have suffered from depression and anxiety for many years and my psychologist asked about my family history. I think this is because mental illness may run in families and also, things that happen during our childhood tend to affect things in our later life. EG I was bullied at school and my dad and I didn’t always get on. I think these are a few things that might have added to my lack of confidence and self hatred.
Also, I am naturally quite a nervous, sensitive person, infact, my mother and I are so alike with our personality traits! xx

Q: If you get discharged from the marine corps with an adjustment disorder, can you…?
after you get discharged from the marines with adjustment disorder, can you still become a police officer as a civilian?? what type of discharge is an adjustment disorder? how do i get a discharge upgraded from general to honorable. thank you.

A: It depends on your RE code, which can be found on your DD-214. But since you said your discharge was for “adjustment disorder”, it’s probably something like an RE-4.
And let me ask you this. If you couldn’t adjust to life in the military, do you honestly think you would have what it takes to be a police officer? I’m not being mean, just realistic.
As to upgrading your discharge, since you were in the Marines, you would petition the Board of Naval Records (as the USMC falls under Department Of the Navy).

Q: What is the difference between a parody diagnosis and a adjustment disorder diagnosis form a therapist as it?
relates to insurance copays and to applying for jobs in law enforcement? (Say as a police officer, prison guard or parole officer.) This is all so confusing!

A: REPORTED for posting the same question twice!!

Q: what is “adjustment disorder with disturbance of emotion and conduct”?
My psychiatrist gave this to me as a diagnosis and I would like to know what it means. I am in the army and have been deployed.

A: An adjustment disorder is less severe than other disorders and just needs the right treatment (talking to a psychiatrist which you’re doing). This explains it:

An adjustment disorder is a debilitating reaction, usually lasting less than six months, to a stressful event or situation. The development of emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor(s) occurring within 3 months of the onset of the stressor(s).

These symptoms or behaviors are clinically significant as evidenced by either of the following:

Distress that is in excess of what would be expected from exposure to the stressor.

Significant impairment in social, occupational or educational functioning.

The symptoms are not caused by Bereavement.

The stress-related disturbance does not meet the criteria for another specific disorder. Once the stressor (or its consequences) has terminated, the symptoms do not persist for more than an additional 6 months.

Adjustment Disorders Subtypes:

With Depressed Mood
With Anxiety
With Mixed Anxiety and Depressed Mood
With Disturbance of Conduct
With Mixed Disturbance of Emotions and Conduct – what you have

I hope all turns out well and thanks for serving our country!

Q: Can a diagnosis of “severe adjustment disorder” create the inability to discharge the duties office?

A: Yes it can! I strongly suggest you speak with a psychologist and/or psychiatrist about this. There are limitations on these individuals, and some of those limitations can be accommodated. Unfortunately, depending on the severity and manifestation of the condition, not everyone with that disorder can continue to discharge their duties.

Q: adjustment disorder how to deal with someone who has this problem?
how to deal with a girlfriend who has this problem iam going crazy too i try to support her but some times it hard to deal it she is going to a therapist . it just seem like our relationship its getting worse how long it takes to go back to normal .

A: Adjustment disorders are temporary mental disorders that result from a stressful life change-a breakup or separation, losing a job, an illness, moving. Most people adjust within a short period of time, but others have trouble adjusting and begin to feel self-destructive or depressed. This inability to cope with the stressful change is an adjustment disorder.

Some who have an adjustment disorder choose to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol, which can lead to a substance abuse problem. Treating substance abuse and adjustment disorder in the same patient requires a multi-pronged strategy.

Build a support network within your family, girlfriend and friends. Find an outside support group to talk with about the stressful issues you are dealing with, as well as substance abuse problems. Having people behind your girlfriend that you can talk to can keep things in perspective and encourage your girlfriend in her attempts to use coping skills instead of drugs and alcohol.
Take care as Always!
