Q: Is it possible to have a lot of the symptoms of depression without actually being depressed?
Also, is it possible for people who know you well (parents, best friends..) to think that you’re perfectly fine if you’re depressed?

I’m not saying likely… Just possible.

A: Absolutely, we all have low points in our life and it doesn’t mean we’re depressed, just temporarily bummed out. Depression is when it’s severe and consistant for a long period of time.

My family didn’t know I was depressed until I told them 5 years later. So absolutely it’s possible. Although it’s unlikely they won’t notice any changes in said depressed individual.

Q: Are there any vitamins that can help reduce the symptoms of depression?
I’m female, and I was once told that B6 can help… is that true?
Are there any others that can help?

A: depression is one of the major psychological illnesses. it is caused due to chemical imbalance in the brain or due to purely psychological causes like lost of job, death of relatives, which is called reactive depression. don’t rely on the advice of quacks, consult a good psychiatrist.

Q: What exactly causes and are the symptoms of depression and ways to get over it?
thanks for your answers!

A: I do not know about the chemical imbalance causes of some peoples depression. But I think the majority of people their depression could be resolved through varying degrees of effort in cognitive type therapies, particularly REBT.

Life is tough. Tougher for some than others. Bad things happen to good people.

I make a distinction between depression and sadness. In both I experience negative feelings that are not pleasant. My goal is to experience the appropriate negative feelings of Sadness instead of demanding I only experience pleasant feelings.

Depression is largely the result of irrational perceptions. Perceptions which if scrutinised would prove to not be realistic (true), logical or helpful. In the mind of a depressed person it is not unusual to overstimate negative events, problems and consequences. Extreme and rigid values and beliefs often self-sabotage depressed people. Unwittingly and forgivably of course, no-one wants to shoot themselves in the foot.

Sadness is characterised by rational perceptions of negative events, for example viewing negativity at its right size. The Sad persons views of negative events will prove to be based in reality (true) , logical and helpful to them. The negative emotion is not only less intense, but feels qualitatively different, for example, a Sad person is unlikely to be racked with guilt and self-condemnation as they will not be judging themselves harshly as failures, worthless etc, and instead will likely be accepting their fallibilty and current limitations as human beings.

He says it is all in the head. I have been trying to control it myself but it just gets harder and harder. I would go behind my husbands back to the doctor but I am not working and I have no money for me to use with out him knowing what I used it for. Q: What are the symptoms of depression and is it possible for it to last several months and still be aware of it?

A: Depression can last years, its not the sort of thing you can get over in a few days!

Symptoms vary from person to person but can include difficulty sleeping, feeling of hopelessness, tired, lethargic, tearful, emotionless, and many more

Q: I have almost all the symptoms of depression, but I don’t feel like I could possibly be depressed?
I’ve felt this way for so long, I can’t imagine that I could have been depressed for that long. Also, I still can laugh and get happy.

Just yesterday I was watching a movie and I forgot about everything and I was enjoying myself and laughing. Is this possible to do when you are depressed?

A: Anyone could match themselves with the symptons but be the happiest person in the world. I’m a generally happy person, but I’m still extremely sensitive – thus, the computer diagnoses me as depressed. I don’t buy it and you should not either.

It helps to spend time with yourself and relax. Watching a comedy movie comfortably and not pressuring yourself with anything can really ease your mind. If it works, do it. Do not feel forced to find self disagnosis websites – have faith in everything you do and you will be better off.

Best wishes.

A: Depression is caused by chemical imbalances of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and other important neurotranmitters in the brain which stabilize emotions. Psychologists state that depression is a unhealthy state which we ‘can’ work through in order to experience greater levels of happiness. Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD along with Psychologists Mark Williams, John Teasdale, and Zindel Segal have authored an ‘excellent’ self-help book called: “The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness”. Mindfulness, a simple yet powerful way of paying attention to your most difficult emotions and life experiences, can help you break the cycle of chronic unhappiness once and for all, that you may experience greater levels of happiness. In ‘The Mindful Way through Depression’, it is explained why our usual attempts to “think” our way out of a bad mood or “just snap out of it” leads us deeper into the downward spiral of depression. Through very insightful lessons-drawn from both Mindfulness and Cognitive Therapy – Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD and Psychologists- Mark Williams, John Teasdale, and Zindel Segal demonstrate how to sidestep the negative habits that lead to unhappiness and despair, including self-blame and rumination so you can effectively face life’s challenges with much resilience.

Q: What steps can I take if I have symptoms of depression during pregnancy or after childbirth?

A: Make sure you are taking plenty of vitamins and getting exercise. Also, remember that it is temporary and however you feel will eventually go away.

Q: Are teachers trained to look for symptoms of depression?
I mean, are they taught (supposedly in their teacher training course or whatever it is that they do) to notice it and what to do about it if they do?

..please answer i really want to know

Thanks in advance :)

A: Teacher here.

In the US, most teachers usually have an Adolescent Psychology course under their belts as part of their teacher training (well, most new ones anyway). This sort of training helps us a lot in identifying which students are having emotional troubles. Also, depending on the local school system, we sometimes have in-service training sessions related to troubled students.

However, it’s never a 100% thing. First off, not all of us get said training. Second, some teachers are pretty oblivious and choose not to pay attention to student problems. Third, sometimes we just miss it, honestly. Many students are really, REALLY good at masking their problems, whatever they might be.

We try our best, and when we find a troubled student, quite often we send them to guidance counselors or school psychologists, who are better trained to handle sensitivie emotional issues.

Speaking for myself, I’ve developed a “so-so” sense for depression in kids simply due to on-the-job experience… but it isn’t perfect. I’d give myself a B in that subject. ^_-

Q: What are the physical symptoms of Depression?
Okay, I have been depressed for a while now. It disrupts my sleep pattern nearly every night; today I have been nearly collapsing and passing out. Is this more a sign of Anxiety? Do I need to take Anti-psychotics? What should I do, because I’ve never been this bad off before? I’ve only been an adult for a few years, so I’m just figuring this out recently…

A: Passing out isn’t really a sign of depression. Do you mean you are nearly losing consciousness from hyperventilating or hysteria brought on by severe anxiety/panic? If so, that in itself sounds more like an anxiety disorder, which could be acting in combination with any depressive episodes you may be experiencing. But have you gone to a doctor at all? First, get a routine physical, plus some blood tests, etc. You may not have depression: your symptoms could be the result of a wide range of other conditions and it would be wise to cover some of those basis. Then, go see a good psychodynamic psychologist and he/she may suggest psychopharmacological medications if it does indeed turn out that you could benefit from them.

Q: What are some common symptoms of depression for teenagers?

A: Loss of interest in things, withdrawal/isolation, sleeplessness or excessive sleeping (I know it’s contradictory, but it’s true), emotional… easily upset, no motivation…. for starters. Those are the external ones. You want internal? Thoughts of dying and/or suicide, worrying over nothing, thinking people are against you or don’t understand…. etc. Depression is horrible.
