Q: Neurontin?
okay so what i was wondering, is if neurontin is a drug thats abused to the extent of oxycodone, vicodin, etc? and if so, what are some street names for it? and any other info you can give me would be awesome.

i dont intend on using, but i need this information simply because im studying medicines and cant find it myself because im tired. ha thanks guys.

A: Neurontin, like anything else, can be abused. If overdosed it can be dangerous. This med is started in small doses and worked up to the desired (by a physician) dose. It is not a drug of choice for abuse, however, because it works with the brains neuroreceptors it isn’t to be disregarded. Some people will try to use and abuse anything they can!

Q: neurontin ???
can neurontin make anxiety worse?
thanks everyone. waiting for my doc to call back. i think im done with this med.

A: SIDE EFFECTS: Drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, fatigue, vision changes, weight gain, nausea, dry mouth, or constipation may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: tremor or shaking, swollen arms/legs. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: loss of coordination, mental/mood changes. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: persistent sore throat/fever/cough, unusual bleeding/bruising, pain/redness of arms or legs, chest pain, trouble breathing, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, hearing loss, stomach/abdominal pain. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Q: How does Neurontin work on the nerves to stop pain?
I have a herniaed disk in my lower spine and was prescriped neurontin 300 mg to take only at night. A friend has neuropathy caused by diabiets and he was prescribed 300 mg neurontin to take 3 times a day. He was told by his care provider that the neurontin burned out the nerve endings to stop the pain. What we really want to know is, How does Neurontin actually work on the nerves? Does it destroy the nerve endings?

A: Neurontin (brand name) is gabapentin. It slows nerve synapses between the nerves. It does not destroy nerve endings. I am on 3600 mg a day now, and the feeling in my feet is close to normal, whereas before they would burn and tingle. It is used as an anti-seizure medication, and people have been on it for years. It is now available generically as gabapentin, and will save you a TON of money if you get the generic medication. Your friends care provider is someone who he should NEVER SEE AGAIN, in my opinion, as that is so unprofessional.

Q: How long until neurontin withdraw symptoms subside and until then, what can I do to ease my pain?
I have been taking neurontin for months for nerve pain. Now I am off the medication. I have terrible anxiety, dizziness, and physical pain. What can I do, besides go back on neurontin?

A: withdrawal symtoms peak 48-72hours after you stopped taking neurontin. your best bet would be to either tamper down off the medication (tell your doctor your going through withdrawal and he may give you more to use to tamper down with) or you can just go cold turkey. withdrawal is never comfortable no matter what you do what i recommend is if you can tolerate it…just wait it out..sorry i wasnt more help

Q: How long does Neurontin stay in your system? And is it considered a controlled substance such as speed?
I have to take a drug test today. I took a non-prescribed Neurontin pill yesterday, will it effect my drug test if they are testing for narcotics such as speed, opiates, etc.

A: First things first, I would ask why you took a non-prescribed Neurontin. Gabapentin, tradename Neurontin, is an anti-seizure medication which is also used to treat certain (and very specific) pain conditions. Its dosing needs to be closely regulated, and there are a couple of very serious but rare side effects including a life-threatening rash and in fact, seizures. If you took the pill from someone who is prescribed Neurontin, you need to understand that that person has likely already been started on a lower dose of the drug and worked up to the higher dose.

That said, Neurontin has an elimination half-life of 5-7 hours, if you have healthy kidneys. That means that half of the drug will be gone from your system in 7 hours, 75% gone in 14 hours, 87.5% gone in 21 hours, etc. As far as I know, commercial drug tests do not routinely screen for Neurontin and I don’t believe there is any cross-reactivity with controlled substances.

Moral of the story: DO NOT TAKE MEDICATIONS WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR YOU!

Q: What’s the difference between the medications Neurontin and lyrica?
I have seen advertisements for lyrica (or pregabalin) and heard it’s just a stronger form of Neurontin or (gabapentin).
It’s also in the control class while gabapentin is not.Does anyone know the major difference if any?

A: pregabalin are related to gabapentin. Neurontin has few side effects which include sleepiness, dizziness, unsteady gait, fatigue and eye twitching.Gabapentin appears to be relatively safe and has not been shown to interact with other drugs except for it’s potential of added sedation. Gabapentin may interfere with the reading of N- Multistix in detecting urine protein. Whereas,Alcohol and drugs that cause sedation may increase the sedative effects of pregabalin. The most common side effects of pregabalin are dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, edema (accumulation of fluid), blurred vision, weight gain, and difficulty concentrating. Other side effects include peripheral edema, reduced blood platelet counts, and increased blood creatinine kinase levels. Increased creatinine kinase could be a sign of muscle injury, and in clinical trials three patients experienced rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle injury).

Q: What is the boiling point of Gabapentin (Neurontin) and does it decompose before then?
I’ve been doing a little research on Neurontin and I even looked up the MSDS for Gabapentin. No where can I find any listings on the Boiling point of gabapentin let alone its melting point… My original question to cause my research was to check when gabapentin melts, vaporizes, and if it decomposes anywhere along the way… Probably upon melting?

A: It is interesting that many compounds have not been completely characterized by all selling it. The reference gives the data sought, but always take such data with a grain of salt unless you find another source. This was found with a google search of the CAS# and MSDS.

Q: What are the side effects of taking neurontin and advil?
I have a prescription for neurontin (for restless leg syndrome). When I have any aches or pains I take advil (over the counter pain med). Will there be any side effects or chemical reactions?

A: You would do best to call the Dr. or Pharmacy on this one. They are the ones that can legally give you a safe answer on this.

Q: What are the purposes for the doctor prescribed drug of Neurontin?
My physician prescribed this to me to relieve some of the discomfort associated with chronic back pain. I’ve looked it up on the internet and see that it is commonly prescribed for siezures. Is this also an effective drug to relieve back pain as well, or was this perhaps prescribed in error. I’ve had steroid injections in my lower back an gotten some relief. I would really like to hear from those with knowledge of the drug Neurontin as well as those that have had the steroid injections for back pain and what kind of results you have experienced with both. Thankyou!

I have seen Neurontin prescribed often for neuropathic pain that is unrelieved by other medications. It appears from reviewing these links that there is a bit of controversy going on regarding its use.I do not have personal knowledge of the steroid injections but anecdotally have heard that they do not offer a long term solution and the steroidal drugs used also come with a laundry list of side effects.I have suffered back pain in the past and the only treatment that I advocate or that has provided any real relief is chiropractic treatment. A good chiropractor will evaluate your backs condition using x-rays and possibly MRI which youve likely had done already anyway, and advise you on some alternative options.

Q: Ive been taking Neurontin and i feel pretty good anyone else on it?
Ive been taking cause i was on narcotic pain pills so iam out right now and i took a neurontin and i don’t have the withdrawals like i would and i can sleep i feel relaxed and calm i do have depression some what iam on zoloft don’/t really think its working but i don’t know. But i heard it helps pain pill withdrawls.

A: I am bi-polar and have taken both Neurontin and Zoloft. Not knowing how long you have been on these medications, I know that some anti-depressants can take up to three wks. to fully get into your system. If you are still depressed see your Dr.

Q: Is there anyone who has previously or continuously taken the drug GABAPENTIN (NEURONTIN) while pregnant?
I have been taking 800mg of neurontin 4x a day for 6 years now for neuropathic pain all over my body. (I don’t have epilepsy) I wanted to soon try to conceive but wished that there were more studies of this anticonvulsant drug and pregnancy. I thought it would help to stop the drug months before trying but would like to know the outcomes of some births with this drug.

A: I’ve never used the drug while pregnant, but being educated in pharmacy, the pregnancy category for Gabapentin is “B”. That means that either the animal studies showed that nothing happened to the fetus during pregnancy or that animal studies showed an effect but human studies did not. I would discuss this further with a doctor to see if the risks outweigh the benefits, but I would think that you’d be ok. Gabapentin is in the same pregnancy risk category as common Tylenol (acetaminophen/Paracetamol).

Q: Can Neurontin help with multi level disc disease?
My husband just had an MRI and it showed that he has multi level disc disease and will potentially need surgery-until the surgery (our appt with Neuro surgeon is 3 months away!) could Neurontin help him with the pain?

A: Neurontin helps with NERVE pain only. It also takes a little while for the drug to start working; and if the doctor prescribes this medication they will likely start him on a low dose. If he is still having nerve pain, then they will increase the dose.
I take this medication for nerve pain due to nerve damage/scar tissue following spinal fusion and laminectomy surgery. I started having problems two days post-op, and I was started on a low dose in the hospital, and the dose has been increased a couple times following my discharge.
Also, this is important; do NOT stop taking this medication suddenly. Withdrawal symptoms could occur, and the doctor will reduce the dose gradually to avoid this.
I know how it is; I had to wait two and a half months to see the neurosurgeon, then another two months for the surgery. After months of pain management, it was getting hard to get my employer to understand the situation. Hopefully your husband can get his surgery done sooner than that, so he can be on his way to recovery.
I wish him luck.

Q: How long do I stay on neurontin?
I am on neurontin for pelvic pain. It is working great, but I want to have a baby in a few years. How long do I stay on neurontin for pain? If I go off to have a baby, will the pain come back?
I’ve been on neurontin for about a month. I’m just seeing if anybody else has experience with going off of it-for example, does the pain come back? Does it depend on the condition?

A: you shouldn’t cut off neurontin by ur self u should ask ur doctor .. and then u can cut it by decrease ur dose .. i think the doctor can handle it easly ..

Q: What would happen if I took Neurontin?
I have recently come across a giant bottle of Neurontin. I have no medical use for it whatsoever. What would happen if I popped a few? Any trippy side effects?

A: I took Neurontin for Anxiety once (the doctor thought it would help I guess).

Well It was AWFUL!!! I ended up in the hospital until it passed out of my system because it caused dizziness and racing thoughts…

Neurontin is an anti-convulsant/mood stabilizer/nerve pain relief medication sweetie. Not a party popping pill….

Don’t touch them! You’ll regret it. I sure did and I was prescribed them! lol

Q: What are the problems of neurontin?
I have heard about neurontin. I want to know the major side effects of the neurontin before takin the pills?

A: All pills have side effects not only neurontin. The following are the some side effects of it,
You will have confusion.
Swelling on your feet.
You would have fever and body aches.
Easy bruising.
It also cause some allergic reactions like skin rashes.
